"Which of you wishing to construct a tower does not first sit down and calculate the cost to see if there is enough for its completion? Otherwise, after alying the foundation and finding himself unable to finish the work the onlookers should laugh at him and say, "This one began to build but did not have the resources to finish.' Or what king marching into battle would not first sit down and decide whetehr with ten thousand troops he can successfully oppose another king advancing upon him with twenty thousand troops? But if not, while he is still far away, he will send a delegation toa sk for peace terms. In the same way, everyone of you who does not renaunce all his possessions cannot be my disciple."
-Luke 14:28-33
In discernment then we determine two things. First we discern what it is that God is asking of us. In the passage above Jesus uses the example of building a tower or leading an army. Discerning God's will for us has a lot more to do with understanding what discernment is in the first place and coming to know and love Jesus than it does with knowing what God's will actually is.
Once we begin to establish a relationship, the discernments may begin to turn to learning how to discern what God's will is, but this includes the two hardest steps of actually surrendering to God's will and learning to listen to God. Within the guided discernments we can hope to prepare the youth to begin doing so through their own personal discernments at home, this last part is primarily up to them.
